![]() Napoleon was obviously an intelligent and decisive man, who through sheer determination and self belief made himself one of the greatest generals in history. With this in mind, the half an hour tutorial that “eases” you in to Napoleon’s Campaigns seems, let’s say, optimistic about my untapped genius and flair for military tactics. Napoleon’s Campaigns allows you to relive Napoleon’s epic crusade across Europe from its early beginnings in 1805, right up to his historical defeat in 1815, made famous by an Abba song. The game allows the player to recreate these battles and subsequently try to change the outcome, marching further through Europe than Napoleon ever managed. As expected from a historically accurate turn based strategy game, detail is paramount and the developers Ageod certainly know their stuff. The troops, weapons and uniforms are obviously well researched and care has been taken to satisfy enthusiasts. Everyone else will simply be able to distinguish one regiment from another. Players move regiments across the game map and combat begins when troops come in to contact with one another. At this point several factors are calculated ranging from troop positions, weather, terrain, leadership, regiment size. Each of these factors carries a modifier, that when compared to the opposing side’s determines who the victor is and what casualties the loser sustains. To win the campaign players must take and protect specific objectives of strategic importance i.e. towns and if both sides fail to capture all of the objectives then the victor will be the side who has gained the most victory points. ![]() Napoleon’s Campaigns expects a lot of a player and those with the patience will be rewarded with hours of strategic entertainment. It must be stressed that only people with an interest in historic battles bordering on unhealthy should play this game. The map is graphically well produced and animations are pleasant to watch for about ten minutes. The game is very statistic heavy and requires navigation of numerous screens and information boxes. After extended play we did start to see information boxes listing troop morale in our sleep, forming plans of attack to grab the last seat from an old lady when getting on a bus. The developers have made playing the game easy to get the hang of but difficult to master and this should please their target audience. Napoleon’s Campaign isn’t a game for everyone and it will probably only appeal to a specific market but the developers know this and have taken great care and time to allow players to immerse themselves in the Napoleonic period . ![]() Napoleon's Campaigns is a polished and well designed game that offers players hours and hours of engrossing gameplay. The inclusion of e-mail two player mode and internet play does offer extended playtime as does the opportunity to carry on Napoleon’s campaign after Waterloo. A very accurate and entertaining game if you have the patience. Score: 7/10
