Everyone loves Christmas presents and 3D Realms have delivered dutifully. Out of nowhere, (early this morning) the developers behind the ever elusive Duke Nukem Forever title stated that today would see a teaser trailer. Posted with the news was a rendered shot of Duke and it sent the internet into overload, so much so that their official website has been up and down the past two days. A few hours ago saw the release of the trailer and you can see it here. There’s a lot more than meets the eye and we’ve digested every part of it to bring you a well thought analysis. Lock and Load, because the king is back. From the moment you hit the play button, the thumping heavy metal music draws in. It’s dramatic, adrenaline pumping and fierce. The 3D Realms logo fades out into a dark room, with a single spot light on one of the hardest characters ever seen in a video game. Centered in this grim room, Duke sits hunched, pressing weights. A roof fan spins casting shadows over the man himself, Mr. Duke Nukem. His typical hard-man image is conveyed, both by the weights and trademark cigar. His veins pop out as his muscles tense, his skin shining from sweat.
![]() With the help of ‘flashback’ effects, we’re given glimpses of in game footage. Brief snippets are teasingly revealed only for the viewer to be pulled back to Duke ripping weights. We’re given shots of the new enemies, one is very like the assault troopers seen back in Duke Nukem 3D. The setting; a standard American street with a bus covered in blood (as well as a wrecked police car in the background). The game looks to be heading for a mature rating; as we are granted a shot of an assault trooper slapping the camera downwards, revealing human remains (a marine?) The clip happens so fast it’s hard to see the graphical prowess of the game, but the textures look realistic and the models, shiny and oozing with life. The music then ups in beat to show the inner workings of a alien space craft. The viewer is then charged by what can only be compared to as an Octabrain (from DN3D), its teeth on show, accompanied by a ferocious screech. We’re treated to a glimpse of an old friend, a Pigcop roaring with dead, mutilated bodies surrounding him. Roaring at the camera we flick back to the Duke scene, the music increasing in density and tempo. An unknown enemy then appears on screen, a lengthy snake-like being, in which can only be described as a sewer. The movement is grotesque as it flings around, bearing its sharp teeth. Living up to its name, a teaser trailer, that’s the most it shows, enough for speculation and description but no hard facts. We’re given a final view of Duke, standing, cracking his knuckles. He blows smoke at the camera and the timeless theme blares out in full effect. Fading to black, the old-school radioactive symbol appears and we’re given a ripped American flag and the logo. The trailer closes with the usual wit of Duke; “I’m looking for some alien toilet to park my bricks, who’s first?” The trademark humour is there, the enemies are there, some new, some old and the music is there. 3D realms have definitely teased us, and we’re dying for more information. 10 years in development is a ludicrous time period for development, but is 2008 finally going to be the Duke’s year.
