Rejoice gamers, we finally have a new title on the Nintendo Wii that isn’t a mini game collection. Super Swing Golf has actually been out in Japan for over a year now but it’s finally made its way to Europe and we’ve got our hands on it to review. The obvious comparison that’s going to be made is between Nintendo’s first party effort Wii Sports. Even with strong competition, Rising Star Games’ latest tee off hopes to offer the depth that Wii Sports was missing. Does it manage to hit a hole in one or is it out of bounds?

Beginning with the story in an effort to get the trivial out of the way, (yes a golf title can have a story), you play as either the male Scout or female Hana. You’ve been invited to part take in a game of Golf, or PangYa as the game likes to call it in this other dimension. That’s about it. You’ll ignore it and discount it because you’re here for the gameplay.

If you’ve been hitting eagles on Wii Sports then expect a shock. Super Swing Golf is harder and deeper than the competition. You’ll have to judge the win, the green / fairways and get the perfect swing. The game takes into account the twisting of your wrist when you go for a stroke. It attempts to recreate the basic fundamentals of golf and does a pretty good job at it. The result is a more natural feel, a responsive experience. The level of power is taken into consideration and you’ll be rewarded for consistency. You can generally get to the green within three strokes, but tighten your wrist action and the game loses its toughness.

The majority of the time you’ll be playing against the AI and while it often makes a ten foot shot on a difficult rolling green it does make its mistakes. The further you progress into the game, the harder the AI gets, but you’ll have had sufficient practice to counter it.

There are fourteen courses which are thrown at you during the Tour Mode. You’ll play off against a single AI opponent out of three games. The usual rules apply apart from in the tutorial mode where the first player to sink the ball wins. If you’re not up to the serious competition then there are plenty of mini-games to waste your time on. The usual customization features; difficulty, number of holes and weather. There’s plenty to unlock ranging from new characters, clothing, clubs, etc. There’s no Mii support though.

The game has local support for up to four players which is played via one controller. Sadly there’s no online multiplayer so you’ll have to make do with the Balloon Pop, Darts, Driving Contest, Versus and Stroke Play. The lack of online Multiplayer isn’t that big a deal, but the inclusion of it would have been nice.

There’s plenty to do in Super Swing Golf and we recommend it if you want something that’s challenging compared to Wii Sports – Golf.

Score: 7/10
