Review - Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games

The best things in life come in moderation and sporting events like the World Cup and the Olympics are no exception. Every four years we have a worldwide celebration of sport, athleticism and skill and with it come the usual drunken claims that “I can do that,” as we watch England fail abysmally. As we approach the review of Mario and Sonic the game presents itself as an important event, arguably alongside the actual Olympics. For a gamer, the only real monument about Mario and Sonic is evident in the title, Mario and Sonic, once bitter enemies now allied in a watered down handheld version of a party Wii game. We use the term “watered down” not in a derogatory sense, but to simply point the obvious; it’s on the Nintendo DS. With other Olympic themed games and a plethora of min-gamed games on the DS does Mario and Sonic unite and conquer or does it get torn apart by bitter rivalry?

Review - Bleach: The Blade of Fate

The Nintendo DS lends itself to many genres and obviously some games feel more at home on handhelds than others. RPGs like Pokémon suit the system perfectly because you can pick up and play for as long as you like while still feeling like you’re getting somewhere. It’s rewarding and has enough depth for the hardcore audience but still has the accessibility for the casual cohort. Before this turns into a review of Pokémon, let’s move swiftly to the point. Bleach: The Blade of Fate is a funny package and we’re talking unusual rather than comical. First off is the fact that it’s a fighting game, a genre that isn’t exactly common on the DS. Secondly is the fact that it’s got enough playability as a title found on consoles. It’s got a story mode, arcade mode, versus mode, training mode, challenge mode, survival mode and time attack mode. On top of that is the option to buy new sounds, artwork, cards (we’ll get to that) from the Urahara shop. So, it’s got the depth, but does Bleach: The Blade of Fate have the punch?

Review - Asterix at the Olympic Games

Asterix aux jeux olympiques. For those lacking an education in French, it translates to Asterix at the Olympic Games. It was the most expensive film ever to come out of France (78million Euros) and took the ever-popular comic book into the live-action arena. The tradition of ‘movie-game-tie-ins’ continues with the multiplatform Asterix at the Olympic Games. The game ties in a cartoon art-style, some slapstick antics and mild puzzle solving in the form of a platform game which is subsequently sprinkled with various sport minigames. It has a fair amount of content but with other titles like Mario and Sonic at the Olympics fighting for your money does Asterix at the Olympic Games break the world record or does it end up winning the bronze?

Here at Avid Gamer we have to be very careful. We’re very proud of our journalistic integrity, as shown by the fact that we don’t run with rumours, leaks or unconfirmed / secondary sourced news. As well as that, we have to be careful not get carried away. Obviously we’re hardcore gamers and enjoy the titles we review as much as we show in our writing, but reviews always come back to the ideas concerning bias. As a result, we try to avoid other reviews written about a game and sit back, subsequently looking hard at the title; avoiding the craze / hype / reception a game receives. That’s why our review of Audiosurf is being published two weeks on from its release. If we’d reviewed it the day it had come out we’d given it a 10, ranking it as the best game we’ve ever had the opportunity to play. Luckily we took our time and let the media-frenzy die down. As a result we don’t need to comment on the resolved server issues, the few bugs or lack of functionality. (Ed – Opps, I just did.) Audiosurf is the first game to utilize Steamworks, Valve’s software package that allows developers to track their game’s sales, reception as well as provide direct updates and achievements. Audiosurf is groundbreaking, yet strangely familiar at the same time and we’ll explain what we mean by that in due course. So does Audiosurf surf the casual gaming highway or does it crash beneath its foamy waves?

Please Note: The score and comments only apply to the single player portion of the game.

Life is cheap in The Club. So cheap, if fact, that the shadowy organisers seem to be able to afford an endless supply of short-lived goons to temporarily block your path. After a while you stop thinking of them as opponents and begin to recognise them as the developer intended- a quick fix of points to add to your tally. It’s all a bit depressing really; Manhunt may be getting the tabloid coverage, but for “callousness of tone” The Club surely deserves a mention.
