Let’s be honest with one another - you probably don’t need to read a review to tell you whether Universe at War will make it onto your shopping list. A cursory glance at the box is enough to establish that this is a science fiction RTS strictly following the rules established in the 1990’s by Warcraft, Age of Empires and Command & Conquer (Westwood studios were involved then, with past employees now forming part of Petroglyph, the designers this time). The box is less informative when it comes to differences between Universe at War and its decade-old influences, probably because you could scribble down most of its innovations on a post-it note, and still have room for a shopping list and a reminder to phone your gran.

Review - Emergency Mayhem

Emergency Mayhem is first and foremost a mini-game mash up. It brings elements from the classic series, Crazy Taxi, together with the modern mini-game formula. The result? An awful game. Emergency Mayhem managed to keep us entertained for a maximum of five minutes. Following on from those precious five minutes was a downhill slope of mediocrity. The game’s main gist is you’re playing as the emergency services in a town aptly named Crisis City. You’ll run missions for the ambulance department, fire brigade and the police service. The mini-games in question depend on what service you’re controlling, but the differences between the games are barely noticeable.

Review - Iron Man

It’s very difficult to write about Iron Man without it turning into an aimless rant. There’s the age-old argument that video game movie tie-ins are consistently rubbish. On top of that is the annoyance of Iron Man subsequently dominating the charts, when in contrast games like Sins of a Solar Empire struggle to even get released in the UK. Iron Man is generic, tiresome, frustrating, buggy and simply pants (to coin a non-journalistic term). It looks as bad as the skid marks on pants, smells like dirty pants and plays like damp pants. The only thing redeeming it from a rock bottom score is the inclusion of authentic voiceovers. We’re lost to even pose a rhetorical question as we already know the answer. Iron man isn’t a blockbuster hit, not even a B-Movie straight to DVD. It’s one of those films stuck on a 50 best western compilations which no-one cares about. The only important question is why is it so bad?

Review - Hard to be a God

People give God too much stick. Looking after the whole of the world and its inhabitants, mankind, has to be a pretty stressful job. So forgive us if we say it’s hard to be a god.  Despite its title, Hard to be a God has nothing to do with being of divine creation. As outlined in our previous preview, Hard to be a God is the latest game developed by Akella and it draws on the Science Fiction novel of the same name. An alien world is stuck in the middle ages and you find yourself teleported to it, with the aim to survive, partake in quests and fight anything along the way. It’s implausible, silly, and frankly makes no sense why you start the game running the usual errands found in the generic RPG. Does Hard to be a God have what it takes to break through the RPG mould or does it set itself in the shape of a clichéd, outdated game?

Review - Grand Theft Auto IV

Well, here we are. It’s over. Four years, agonizing teaser trailers, gameplay leaks, perfect scores. Grand Theft Auto IV, the most awaited game since its predecessor San Andreas, has arrived. We were lucky enough to get our copy early and have been playing it non-stop so we can get our review out for the release date, 29th April 2008. It’s been approaching slowly, but surely, and gamers will finally get a chance to enter the remodelled Liberty City. We’ve been playing the Xbox360 version and despite comments on the internet, we’re taking Rockstar’s word and judging it graphically in the view that the game is identical on both platforms. Have Rockstar raised the bar yet again or has the ambition crumbled into a pile of pap?
