Squad Command is a turn-based strategy set within the Games Workshop tabletop future fantasy universe, falling somewhere between Field Commander (released last summer) and the X-Com PC games of the 90’s. If any aspect of the last sentence makes you want to stop reading, probably best to do so. If, like me, you have fond memories of both tabletop and turn based video gaming (check my top ten to see where my loyalties lie), then venture on. This isn’t a title likely to win new fans (and is therefore destined not to sell many copies), but for those with a penchant for this sort of thing, it plays a very competent and enjoyable skirmish. Just don’t expect to sound cool when singing its praises to non-believers… Comments (4) |

Customization is big business in the world of video gaming and it seems that every game released nowadays comes with a ton of tweakable options. Developers seem to think that to fall into the category of ‘next generation,’ their game must allow the player the option to fine-tune. There is often a level of great depth that accompanies customizing and it is often the case that it’s too daunting for the player. For every hardcore gamer out there, there is one that just wants to jump in without the hassle. rFactor is one of those games, offering huge levels of customization and realism unforeseen in the racing genre. Boasting “Advanced tire modelling and engine boost modelling” on the box it certainly doesn’t worry about alienating potential buyers. It claims it's “100% realistic” but does the math add up or has it forget to carry the one? Comments (9) |

It couldn’t lose, could it? Following on from the most universally appreciated console FPS of the last generation and its sequel, which is widely considered as online multiplayer gold, Halo 3 only had to turn up, riding high on the wave of hype that has grown steadily through 2007, to be guaranteed a position on every discerning Xbox owners shopping list. It was released to glowing reviews from all quarters, shot to the top of the charts and has stayed there since (12th last time I checked, before the inevitable Christmas rush), with TV and banner ads proclaiming its arrival. On the back of so sickening a success story, I take great pleasure in presenting my opinion on the so-called star within the 360’s crown- I’m not convinced that Halo 3 is actually all that special. Statistics shouldn’t be fun. They are the scourge of mathematics at school, hopelessly unattractive to the opposite sex and as unwelcoming as a kick to the face. It’s a mystery as to why football manager games are so ludicrously popular and addictive. They drum up huge sale figures every year (throughout Europe) and steal thousands of men away from their partners. Football Manager can’t be discussed as a franchise without tracking back three years when Sports Interactive decided to split and develop their football manager game. It won critical acclaim and shunted Championship manager into the dust. Ever since the split, Championship Manager has been hot on Football Manager’s heels and has slowly closed the gap between the two by bringing in new features. So it’s that time of year again, but does this year’s edition manage to qualify or does it pull a McLaren? Be first to comment this article |

From its humble beginnings as a sequel to Farcry to the technologically heavy FPS bonanza that it has become, it’s undeniable that Crysis has a lot of expectation. From the moment that it was unveiled to the public all those many years ago, it hasn’t left the scrutiny of PC gamers everywhere. Promising every graphical effect under its tropical sun and gameplay so in-depth that it borders on realism, it has a lot to live up to. The question is has it successfully fulfilled its promises or has it sank into its overhyped sea. Comments (6) |
