Yesterday Sony revealed to the public that Phil Harrison, (who is basically the boss of Sony’s Computer Entertainment sector) is resigning after fifteen years. The subsequent result of this bombshell is the movement of manpower within the Sony Camp. Robert Dyer now heads the Publisher Relations, Ian Jackson, Sales and Sally Buchanan, HR. In turn those three will report for Jack Trenton who’s the President and CEO. These promotions will unlikely affect any of the games’ production but it is beneficial to be aware of what restructuring is occurring.

What’s 40328 divided by 385? Bring back bad memories about school? If so then Maths Play for Nintendo DS should be dutifully avoided. Published by Ubisoft and a 14th March release date planned you’d better get your thinking caps on. Boasting four game modes, which all involve the rearrangement of cards to create equations, you’ll Drill, Shuffle, Match and Nine your way to maths success.  If that wasn’t enough there are multiple difficulty levels and a multiplayer mode that can support up to five other players which luckily uses only one cartridge (because we doubt this will be a blockbuster hit.) Yet again Maths Play shows that video games aren’t all about murdering and killing.

The industry has been buzzing today following the announcement of two large developments concerning two of the largest companies within it. First off is the confirmation that Take-Two (known for their controversial, yet hugely popular Grand Theft Auto series) received a takeover bid from Electronic Arts of two billion dollars which was subsequently rejected due to ‘undervaluation.’ Strauss Zelnick, the head honcho at Take-Two stated:

We can often be excused for obsessing over what’s happening in our own countries and forgetting the exploits of the video games industry elsewhere in the world. North American’s doesn’t even realise that games are released in Europe while Asia needs an overload of anime graphics before it’s considered a game. This ‘news’ post is just a small sample of how the video games industry is branching out across the world. If you happen to be Miami, Florida then be sure to head down to Community Vib3s, a merging of music and gaming brought by Gamertag Radio. There are live acts from Miami musicians, the chance to show off on Rock Band on stage or take place in a Halo 3 tournament. There’s a free game being gave away every hour and an Xbox 360 elite by the end of the day. It’s taking place on February 23rd. Bigger news perhaps is the news that the China Internet Gaming Organizing Committee (CIG) and GGL Global Gaming signed a pact today to announce the first “Digital Games.” The tournament will be a global event and the Grand Finals (following on from qualifications) will be held in Shanghai. Think you’re good enough? Head over to www.ggl.com. Closer to home is news that GameOn are holding their 72 Lan Party to date in the midlands.

Gears of War 2 is coming this November. There, that is out of the way. Now onto a full overview of Microsoft’s keynote speech at this year’s GDC (Game Developers Conference). Microsoft paved the way for 2008 as yet again another fantastic year for gaming. The biggest news (as already stated above) is that Gears of War 2, the sequel to the 4.5million strong original is landing on the Xbox360 come November. If that wasn’t enough for you Xbox owners, then there was plenty more announced. Fable 2 was showcased by Peter Molyneux and it showed off the dynamic cooperative play. As well as that was the knowledge that the ‘pub games’ found in Fable 2 will be downloadable and playable via Xbox Live Arcade and any fold that you win can be transferred to your Fable 2 character.
