If you're one of the lucky ones who managed to get your hands on a Wii this Christmas, you may be interested in the latest downloadable updates for it. Connecting the console to the internet not only allows you to update your console but it also lets you enter the Wii Shop Channel, within which you'll find several free software downloads for a bit of extra fun. Firstly, you can upgrade the Photo Channel to version 1.1, allowing the channel to play the more versatile AAC music files instead of the limited MP3, and furthermore allows you to post a photo to the channel icon in the Wii Menu.
Secondly, Nintendo have introduced the Mii Contest Channel where you can share your Mii's (the little people who represent players in most Wii games) with the world. You'll be able to see and download other people’s creations, and enter Mii's into themed contests where other players can vote for the best ones. For example, this week the contest theme is 'Hamlet', so everyone wishing to enter shall be creating particularly Shakespearean looking Mii's. Thirdly, you can download the Everybody Votes application. This is a gathering of opinion polls where you, along with other Wii users, can answer questions such as; “Where would you rather sit on an aeroplane?” Thrilling, eh? This download lets you predict other people’s responses and view overall results for the world, or the region. Like the others, this gimmick novelty unfortunately won't hold your attention for very long. These are the little extras that a gamer might as well have as they are free, and while they provide a few minutes of entertainment is seems disappointing that Nintendo have not developed more substantial channels for the Wii. For example, we'd like to see one that gives players game demos or perhaps one where users can see or post photos, music or videos, but alas it is not yet to be. However, this certainly seems like the tip of a very large iceberg so we'll hold our breath for more exciting channels in the future. It is certainly true that the internet has revolutionised console gaming and development in a very large way, the Wii joins the list of current consoles that prove it. Finally, and on a slightly different note, all Wii owners should also be aware that Nintendo are now issuing Wii Remote Jackets, a protective covering for the Wii Remote, with all future Wii shipments. If, as will be the case for the most part of the UK, you didn't receive this with your console package Nintendo are generously sending them out for free. All you have to do is take the serial number from the back of your Wii and go to the official Wii website; www.wii.nintendo.com, enter your details and Nintendo will send you the jackets. I admit it's hardly the crown jewels, but it is a free item that will at least help protect your Wii remote all the same.
