![]() To tie in with our review of Everquest II: Rise of Kunark we got a chance to pitch some questions to the design team. Thanks to Bruce Ferguson, the producer on EverQuest II for taking the time to answer of questions. Bruce Ferguson (BF): The years I’ve spent on EverQuest II been the most exciting years of my life so far. To see a game come from the concepts of a few people to an intense creative effort by a group of like-minded people, and then on to the enjoyment of the multitudes has been very rewarding.
AG: Why do you think EQII has been so well received and still has a solid user base to this day? BF: The game has such a wide variety of game play that it appeals to people on many different levels. From hard core combat, to the creation impulse of crafting, to the opportunity to role play, it really has it all. To top it off, it is set in a world that millions of people are familiar with, the world of Norrath. But even if you haven’t played an EverQuest game in any incarnation before, it really is inviting, and the story telling we do draws you in. And of course, the community plays a huge part of it as well. Any time you have a group of people who enjoy what they’re doing to such a level will always draw in others, so that they can share their enjoyment.
AG: What part of the game world are you most proud of creating? BF: The whole thing! It is really hard to point out any single item that stands head and shoulders above the rest, and the fact is that there isn’t any item that was created alone. I work with a team of extremely talented folks, and we spend hours in discussion over ideas, making sure we all can help improve an idea before putting it into the game.
AG: Have you ever felt that there was something you really wanted to add to the series but couldn’t? BF: Not yet. There are some new ideas we’re kicking around, but they can all be done, it just comes down to a matter of time and resources. One of the great things about working here is that all the staff are gamers at heart, and so ideas about what might be the next cool feature come from all over the company, not just inside the EQII team, and then we just have to figure out how it can be done, and where it fits on the priority list.
AG: What are your favourite’s classes and races to play? BF: I’ve played just about every race and class combination possible, and have enjoyed them all. Some days, I prefer the casters, some days I do melee, and others I’m just interested in some crafting, or spending hours doing RP. It really comes down to the mood I am in.
AG: What’s next for the series? Are we going to see more expansions? Is there an EQ3 in development? BF: We do have some ideas down for the next expansion, and I’m sure you’ll see more information coming down the pike in due time, but we certainly don’t want you to tire of our latest efforts too soon! AG: In one word sum up EQII? BF: Fun. Hands down, that’s the best word to sum up the entire EverQuest II experience. AG: What other games do you play or do you not have the time? BF: I get together with a group of folks and play board games a lot. Things like Settlers of Catan, Bohnanza, Ticket to Ride, Bang!, Carcassone, Queen’s Necklace, Apples to Apples, 6 Nimmt…a whole slew of stuff. I also play Dungeons and Dragons with another group weekly. Online, I play a smattering of World of Warcraft and a lot of EverQuest II.
